GEN ST 297 - Career Exploration in Data Science

Course Description

This course is designed for students pursuing the interdisciplinary data science minor.  In this seminar style course, we will encourage students to reflect on their coursework and experiences in order to identify their skills, strengths and interests. We will support students contextualizing their academic experiences in order to articulate their skillset to employers, graduate schools, and other post graduate opportunities. This course will rely on reflection activities, guest speakers, alumni connections, and small group discussions to build community while helping students build a framework for connecting their minor and major coursework. We hope students complete the course with the tools to reflect, identify, create, and make progress towards short and long term goals after their time at UW.

Learning Objectives

Our goal is that students complete the course being able to do the following:

  • Articulate their understanding and skill set related to data science within the context of their major discipline
  • Reflect on their learning and accomplishments while at UW
  • Gain familiarity with tools to find post-graduate opportunities
  • Build an application portfolio that includes a resume, cover letter, personal statement, elevator pitch, etc.
  • Build community with other data science minor students and recent alumni for networking and mentoring opportunities
